Trend Ahead Alert – Oh My Ombre!

December 12th, 2011

Let’s Trend Ahead Alert – How is the ombre hair trend moving from Summer to Fall? We’ve caught glimpses of ombre taking a darker twist through the seasons by incorporating a rich red color to the tips of hair instead of blonde; this looks especially striking on dark brunettes. However, if you are blonde, we also think a deep golden, almost copper hue would be a beautiful transition into the new Autumn ombre.

What do you think? We’d love to have someone into our studio to get the new Winter/Fall ombre color. The first person to comment here with the words Let’s Trend Ahead! gets 10% off this service.

Goodbye Summer..It’s time to Fall for Fabulous Fall Color

December 1st, 2011

The chill in the air is finally here to stay and it’s time to pull all of your cozy scarves, sweaters, and warm blankets out of the closets! Along with this weather and wardrobe change also comes the seasonal hairstyle switch.

You know what we’re talking about..The annual Autumn hair color change!

Are you among the Fall fashionistas visiting the salon to update your hairstyle? It’s fun to feel a sense of warm, earthy richness as you play up the seasonal styles.

If you’re thinking of making the switch, here are some positives that might help you Fall into the trend!

  • The addition of deeper color shades adds to the depth and contrast of the hair, making it appear rich and shiny.
  • Lowlights help you achieve a new look without completely taking away your prior color. This makes it easy to snap things back up again for Summer.
  • If you aren’t sure how dark you want to go, we can help you achieve the depth of color you like in steps without the shock of doing an all over color.
  • Popular shades for brunettes are deep chocolates and rich reds, while a subtle deep shade of gold or light brown can tone things down for blondes.
  • As always, the color choice ultimately depends on what you are looking for and your current hair color at the time of service. We also factor your style, skin tone and cut when we consult for color.
  • So ladies, if you’re feeling a little light headed these days and want to cozy up to a rich new color, give us a call and schedule some time with one of our stylists!

How To Tip: Storing Bobby Pins

November 11th, 2011

Now that you’ve gotten the hang of using bobby pins, you’ll start realizing the world of creative hairstyle options available to you. Goodbye old ponytail holders! However, over time, you’ll also notice yourself slowly running out of pins, buying a new pack and then slowly running out of those. Where do they all go?

If you’re anything like us, you will eventually find ancient pin specimens buried deep inside the crevices of your car, pins surfacing inside homes that are not your own, freshly washed pins rolling around in your clothes dryer, and always, always will you find a small stash tucked away in each and every purse that you own.

Over the years, we’ve come up with a few tried and true solutions to manage our rogue bobby pin outbreaks. If you know of something that works better, please tell us!

  1. The travel sized Q-Tip Purse Pack. You can find one of these blue plastic containers in almost any drug store that has a nice selection of travel sized needs. About a dollar a piece, we recommend buying two. One obviously to keep for cotton swabs to correct hotel mirror makeup, and the other to create an instant travel sized bobby pin container. We like this idea a lot because the case is the perfect size for keeping pins with you on the go. We’ve been using one for at least 2 years now and the closure has stayed secure, making it easy to throw and stow in a purse when you are running out the door. Bobby pins are like hair insurance, who knows when you might have a blowout!
  2. The magnetic sewing pin dish. Look for one of these at any local craft store or in the sewing department of any box store. The magnetic dish makes it super easy to throw your pins onto when you are cleaning up bobby pin explosions from every area of your living space. This is a good stationary solution, and one that many stylists keep near their salon chairs.
  3. The paper clip dispenser. If you have one of these lying around, or can manage to swipe one from your office, fill that baby up with your bobby pins and voila, instant pin dispenser!

How To Tip: Bobby Pins

November 10th, 2011

With all of the braiding and bunning going on in the fashion world lately, we’d like to share some tips on which bobby pins we like to use and how we use them to ensure all day hold.

Besides simply sticking a pin into your hair, there isn’t really a defined technique on how to use them. However, when we really want to make sure a style stays put and we are dealing with thick hair or a lot of hair, we use a kind of twist method with the pin to super secure the hair. Here’s how we do it:

Step One

First, take a small strand of hair: the smaller the strand, the better the hold a pin can have. Place the strand where you’d like it to stay, open the pin slightly and slide the opening either parallel to the direction of the hair or align the opening so that it points with the direction of the hair.

After sliding the pin a little bit so it contains the strand, press the tip down slightly to grab hair underneath and then turn it back to the opposite direction and push the pin into the hair.  The mouth of the pin should end up facing away from the direction of the hair.

Step Two

Not only does this make the hold very secure, but it also does a good job at hiding the pin so that you can’t even tell it’s in your hair.

Step Three

When creating updos, we prefer to use the regular 2 inch size bobby pins. Roller pins and hair pins are sometimes used for holding heavier or more hair, but we find them a little harder to manage, since the ends to not close tightly together to hold the hair. The mini sized 1 inch bobby pins are also good for styling thin or short hairstyles. If you don’t have time to pin, or just can’t seem to get the hang of it, try using Twist Pins. We recently came across these pins that basically just screw into your hair to keep it all together. Look for these and the standard bobby pins at any local drug store, or for more of a selection, including hair and roller pins, try a public beauty supply store like Sally Beauty.

Product Pick of the Week: Mineral Liquid Powder Foundation

November 7th, 2011

All of us know that just because you have a BF doesn’t mean you can forget your BFF, right?

We’re not talking about your best friend since high school, we’re talking about Boyfriend Foundation!

What the heck is that you ask? Well, we’ve all gone through the period in a new relationship where you don’t want to wash your face and jump straight into bed with your best guy right? Well now you can be worry free with Tami’s Mineral Liquid to Powder Foundation! This makeup stays put all day and night without that greasy or dried out feeling.

with sunscreen and antioxidant protection for ultra sensitive skin!

Tami’s mineral makeup foundation is not like the rest. It goes on in a super light, oil-free cream and dries to a powder almost instantly. The colors are concentrated and made to last.

We aren’t advocating that you skip washing your face every night, but let’s be honest, sometimes fun days turn into awesome nights, and none of us want to wake up in a panic at the morning mirror!

This foundation is also very good in terms of coverage. With 11 available shades, be confident that Tami can custom match a color to your skin tone. We have plenty of clients who want to cover up a blemish or skin issue without having to wear a lot of concealer and heavy foundation. In fact, a recent customer came in for a hair appointment and was upset at her recent development of Rosacea. Tami hooked her up with the perfect shade of this foundation with accompanying loose powder and we’ve been hearing the wonderful and lifesaving properties of it since!

We recommend getting the loose powder along with the mineral foundation in order to set the foundation for an even longer lasting wear, and also to matte down a shiny T-zone if you have one. But, that said, you don’t need the powder every day, the mineral foundation sets so beautifully, you won’t want to put anything else on your face.

Come into the studio and let us match you to one of the shades. Wear the foundation for the rest of the day, maybe spend the night with your BF, and we promise you’ll find a new BFF in Tami’s Mineral Liquid Foundation!

Be one of the first two people to say Boyfriend Foundation in the comments section below and come in for a 10% discount on the purchase of a Mineral Liquid Powder Foundation!

And, don’t forget, once you’ve found your perfect shade, you can always stock up online!

Mature Makeup Tips

November 4th, 2011

Have you ever heard someone tell you, “after 35 don’t wear as much makeup and you’ll look younger, especially around the eyes?”

Well, don’t believe it!

So many people, including makeup artists, believe that after a certain age, less is more. When in fact, women who begin wearing less and less make up end up looking and feeling like they’ve just given up, that their look is plain and they don’t know what to do.

At Tami Scott Studio we believe that women should re-assess their makeup choices as they reach age milestones and look for ways to continue to look fresh and vivacious.

In fact, there are new techniques for makeup application that can create a softer, more mature look so you can continue to look and feel like yourself. You should never abandon feeling good about yourself no matter what age you are!

Here are Tami’s tips on cosmetic applications for mature women:

Getting Started

  • Consult a professional makeup artist that will spend time with you so that you can learn revised techniques and colors that appropriate for you.
  • Great skincare is essential. Good skin = soft appearance.

Foundation, Cheeks and Lips

  • Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and skin type. You might need one with more moisture or a formula that isn’t too dry looking. Loose or compact powder should be used minimally.
  • yellow base concealer can camouflage dark circles.
  • Choose a blush that has a natural but pinkish hue. Nothing too bold. Think soft.

Eyeshadow, Eyeliner and Eyelashes

  • If you have any lines around your eyes that are concerning you, switch to matte or satin based eye shadows. Anything too sparkly will make the lines more pronounced.
  • It’s ok to back off on dark or stronger shades, but don’t omit color all together! So many women think that wearing trendy or bright eye shadow color will make them look younger and this is simply not true.
  • As we age our eyelids may not be a firm as they used to be. Putting a contour color in and above the crease can create depth that is needed to keep the eyelids looking less puffy or sagging.
  • Eyeliner should be soft and smudged or a drawn as a very fine line. Learn to use liquid liner to create a line along the lashes. This makes you look like you have more lashes or that they are coming from a thicker base.
  • Natural looking false lashes are a great way to open up the eye area and add dimension without any extra makeup. As we age our lashes get thinner and lighter in color and it’s important to make them a focal point. Strip False lashes give a lift to the upper eyelid as they adhere to your lash line. The elastic band pulls up and inward. The Key is to learn the correct amount of adhesive to use and to trim the band to your lash lines length. Place the strip right where your lashes meet the skin of your lid.

As you can see, at TSS we believe in the power of makeup! Just because you are getting older does not mean you have to forego looking and feeling fabulous! Many of these tips above are using the same techniques that you have always used, just remember, it’s perfectly ok to wear makeup at any age!
