Interview with Wedding Planner – Lacy Branch
TAMI SCOTT MAKEUP & HAIR STUDIO
INTERVIEW
with Event Planner Lacy Branch
LBE: Can you please tell us a little about what “Tami Scott Studio” is?
TS: EVERYTHING BEAUTY for EVERYONE who needs to look their absolute best for any occasion. I have been a stylist for just over 20 years. I grew up in the industry, my mother was a stylist. It’s my inherited gift. I am a LA trained makeup & hair stylist, I moved out there early in my career to learn how to be even better at what I do. Working with fab photogs out there, I began doing weddings & models on location & when I moved back to STL & grew the on-site service idea here with weddings. I was the first one to do that here. I am also an educator for the hair industry. I firmly believe in giving back to what inspires you. I created my own makeup line inspired by women of every culture for weddings, photography & everyday. All my experience in these areas allowed me to know exactly what every woman needs & can use.
LBE: How long have you been making people beautiful by doing hair and makeup?
TS: 22 years licensed. But I began doing “glamour shots” with my younger sister at the age of 13. And cutting my girlfriends hair in the bathroom at school or at my house. I was the girl who did everyone’s hair & makeup for all the school dances. Went to modeling school as a teenager but really grew into wanting to be the one to make others look & feel pretty. Went to beauty school right after high school & LA 5 years later!
LBE: Are there any trends that you are seeing right now with Bridal hair and makeup?
TS: Loose & Sexy whether up or down are the trends. But sleek & soft classic styles never go out. Side chignons & low set styles are hip as well. Makeup is natural & beautiful whether it’s light or dramatic. Neutral tones with hints of color photograph best.
LBE: Are all stylists created equal when it comes to bridal hair? And why?
TS: Absolutely not! I actually teach a class to the hair industry specifically about this. It’s called Unbridled Skill. You have to be the kind of person who can be nice under any condition, Be up early & professional & on time! Care about someone else’s day before your own. Handle a group of people on the most important day of someone’s life. Know what looks great in photography & on film. Be able to book an appointment 6-12 months in advance & be reliable & still be at the same salon where the bride found you. Be her color & cut stylist & be there for her all the months in between if she has questions. Be time conscious, fast & efficient & skilled all at the same time.
For me a relationship of trust & expertise is the foundation I build with every bride months before her wedding day & on that special day she has NO DOUBT about what kind of service she will receive.
LBE: What do you feel are some common misconceptions brides have when selecting the stylist for their hair or makeup?
TS: That anyone can do it if they say they can. You better get to know them & practice with them on all aspects, way before it’s too late to do anything different. Just because you’ve gone to a certain stylist for years doesn’t mean they have the skill. Don’t ask a friend, or your sister or cousin just to save money. Sad, but true…I can’t tell you how many last minute brides I get that call me saying their stylist went on vacation, can’t get a sitter or just is MIA. None of those things can matter over someone’s special day. I have never missed a wedding in over 15 years. I’ve had flat tires, the flu, stolen makeup kits, wrong directions, loss of electricity… but always got there & made it happen. My brides mean more to me than “me” on their wedding day.
LBE: We all know that most people get their hair done by a professional stylist for their big day. However, it seems they don’t always seek a professional for their makeup. How do you feel about that?
TS: It will show in their photos. Even if ½ the wedding party uses a makeup artist & ½ doesn’t you can pick out who did & didn’t in the pictures. I know photographers that keep copies of wedding parties who did & didn’t or did the ½ & ½ cause some couldn’t afford it or wanted to do their own. Those photographers show those pictures to prove a point. All photographers should do that. You have those pictures for the rest of your life.
LBE: I know we get brides that want to design their wedding so that it represents their style. How can they convey their style of the wedding into how they wear their hair?
TS: Consult with a professional, bring your headpiece, or something you want to incorporate into your look. Bring pictures of what you love & what you hate. Pictures speak a 1000 words. You could say I love the front of this look, the back of this one & the sides of this, the wave or curls in this one…even if you don’t have a clue, show what you like & don’t. A good stylist can psychically decipher it! If it’s not some version of what you love when they are done… they aren’t going do it on the wedding day. I can usually nail it during a consultation, on the wedding day it’s even a better version. Make sure you take pictures of your consultations.
LBE: What are some tips you could give brides about both bridal hair and makeup?
TS: Don’t play around too much with skincare products. Don’t get facials all the sudden. Don’t mess with your hair color dramatically. If you want to change any of these things do it a year in advance. Try false lashes before the day of your wedding if you want them. If you want hair extensions try it out in advance. So many things can enhance your look. On the wedding day, Keep a lipstick, lip liner & compact for touch ups…a good makeup application won’t need any more than that.
Hire a professional. Let that person take care of your beauty needs from the time you get engaged or meet them, until the wedding day….& after! You want flawless makeup that looks fresh for hours, hair that will hold all day & someone you trust & like! When you have your consultation, make sure it holds without hurting, looking stiff or fuzzy. Wear your look all day, dance around the house or sleep in your hairstyle, that’s a test! AND…Pay attention to everything else I have said.
LBE: Many of our clients enjoy the morning before their wedding relaxing in a hotel with their bridal party. Is it possible for you to come to them?
TS: That is why I started my service 15 years ago as an on location bridal stylist. That is what I prefer as well. Where ever is most comfortable & convenient. If they want to be at home with family in their own surroundings, in the luxury of a hotel being caterer to, or wherever everyone should have something to eat & have fun getting ready… I’ll be there for them! Have all the supplies…will travel!
